3 years at Microsoft!!

Its exactly three years since I joined Microsoft and moved to Seattle. Lot of things happened- my team was split, people left, new ones joined, manager has changed, my scope/responsiblity has increased, got a window office :). Over all, I'm happy with my job and work style at Microsoft. I thought I'll take a moment and jot down whatever comes to my mind.

Every passing year brought something new in my life. I got into photography, hiking, swimming, body building, RC flying, Rollerblade skating, stocks & options trading and racquet ball ohhh I almost forgot *If* at all I cook, I rock at it :) (My fianc'e can happily testify on this). I also explored living in different neighborhoods- I moved from Downtown Seattle to Kirkland and then to Kirkland waterfront and finally moved close to my work-Redmond.

I fell in love with the Seattle's beautiful landscapes on day 1 that I had decided that I'm gonna stay in Washington as long as I live in US.

On May 7th, 2010. I came to work a little early and kept 3 pounds of M&Ms in front of my office as it was my third year anniversary at MS. Jeezz, they were gone by evening!! Intrestingly, on the same day my manager asked if I want to interview new candidates. I said "Ofcourse!" instantly and scheduled for May 12th. You won't believe but interviewing is difficult too!! It's not just throwing impossible questions at the interviewee. It is an art to extract the best out of someone in just one hour. Many folks get tensed at the thought of a technical interview which makes it even more difficult to evaluate.

I love interviewing and I wanted to be good at it. I asked myself how can I evaluate someone in just an hour and come up with "Hire" or "No Hire" decision? I took this seriously and completed an internal training on "how to interview". I came across some interesting points such as never ask knowledge based questions because the candidate either knows it or doesn't based on if he had read that on MSDN. There's no room for creativity and evaluate how he can grow at Microsoft. Solving a problem gives you 60% score. The remaining 40% lies in clarity of thinking, evaluating different appraches, confidence and thinking of extensability.

I took the first round and am very happy that my judgement was accurate and matched with four others interviewers! :) I cant disclose further details as it violates MS corporate policies.

thats it for now..will continue more in my next post!!
